On Thursday, May 9th at approximately 12 Noon, the City of Malden Engineering Department will install a temporary test pilot of a new road lay-out where Broadway (Route 99) crosses the Northern Strand Trail (Bike Path). The test will continue through Monday May 13th. The Malden Traffic Commission approved the test in order to provide input into a state-funded effort to improve the safety of many trail crossings in Malden, part of an even larger state-funded project to pave the Northern Strand Trail from the Malden line through Revere, Saugus and Lynn.
Councillor-at-Large Stephen Winslow notes that the test is an effort to respond to multiple comments by trail users at a May 2018 public meeting expressing safety concerns with the Broadway crossing. The safety hazard arises when drivers swing around other vehicles that have yielded to people using the crosswalk. The test pilot will install temporary lines and signage to test the design of restricting traffic to one lane in the south bound direction at the trail crossing. After the vehicles cross the trail, vehicles will then enter either the left turn or through right turn lanes. The north bound lane will not be affected.
